In what can be described as a landmark, Ohanaeze Ndigbo in a paper delivered to the press over the weekend in London on the issue of “Operation Python Dance” which supposed to be in operation since 1st January in the South East, Nigeria has warned the federal government of Nigeria to stop the exercise immediately.
It should be recalled, that the general officer commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Army, Maj Gen Abubakar Maikobi visited Ebonyi state governor, David Umahi to inform him about the Army’s plan to commence the Operation Python Dance “Egwu Eke 111”, which the state will be used as the operational headquarters for the programme. The operation was made to commence on 1st January to 28th February 2019, the officer said.
The President, Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK & Ireland, Dr. Nnanna Igwe, who delivered the message to the newsmen in London has frowned his face over the programme instituted by the federal government and requested for the programme to be stopped immediately. Dr. Igwe who was seen to be in a state of consternation and dismay described the operation as “uncalled for” and asked the federal government to stop the exercise immediately for the interest of peace and maintaining the democracy.
Dr. Igwe alarmed, wondering the reason why a peaceful and democratic society as the South East should be having such a programme. While expressing his displeasure over the act by the federal government, he queried, why the government should engage in such operation without consultation.
According to him, the South East needs to be consulted before, if such exercise is needed or not. He also expressed concern over the incoming election and demanded to stop the operation in the South East for the interest of peace and maintaining a credible election.
In interaction with Ogene Ndigbo Newspaper, Dr. Nnanna Igwe said, “Ohanaeze Ndigbo UK condemns in its entirety the ‘Operation Python Dance” nationwide by the Federal Government. This programme is uncalled for in a peaceful and democratic society without consultation. We, therefore call on the Federal Government of Nigeria to stop the exercise immediately in the interest of peace and credible elections”.
In the same vein, he lamented over the deterioration of Akanu Ibiam International Airport which the government has left to decay. The Airport has substandard and poor infrastructures as a result of negligence of the government. It has been reported that the Airport has no landing light at night, but has only one runaway with poor tarmac.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo Uk has viewed this with utmost concern, calling the federal government to address the problem without any further delays. And Dr. Nnanna Igwe further said, Enugu International Airport is the worst worldwide Airport with only one carrier, but extended his gratitude to Ethiopian Airline, an Airline company he described as the “Superb Ethiopian Airline” that is delivering great service to Ndigbo.
